However, it may come as a surprise to many that prior to the 20th century, colors were not gendered like today. According to them there is no particular colour that can govern a person's identity as a male or a female. Many who believe in gender neutral parenting disregard this notion of sex-specific colours - pink for girls, blue for boys. Just like how men and women are subject to gendered roles, colour, which has nothing to do with "sex", has become gender signifiers. While sex is the biological and physiological difference between a male and a female, gender refers to the socially constructed characteristics of women and men. pink and blue, as markers of "sex", which is often misunderstood as gender. In a world where we talk of equality for both men and women, where we advocate gender fluidity and want to ensure that our children are not bound by stereotypical roles, we're still using colour i.e.
